About Theraplay® Family Therapy

What is Theraplay?

Sessions consist of guiding the parent and child through fun and playful activities that foster engagement and connection. The act of engagement allows the parent and child to form a secure attachment. With that healthy relationship, the parent is able to regulate their child’s behaviour while communicating love, joy, and safety to the child. Sessions help the child feel secure, connected, cared for, and worthy.

Theraplay is focused on a caregiver-led process. The goal is to develop a secure attachment between the caregiver and child. Theraplay is not talk therapy.

What do sessions look like?

Sessions are 1 hour long and happen with the therapist, child and parent.

Following a play assessment, the therapist leads the caregiver through games, playful challenges, and nurturing activities with their child that are tailored to the specific needs of that parent and child.

The parent will agree with the therapist how many sessions they would like to have. 10 sessions is usually enough to begin to see positive change.

Throughout the process, the therapist will connect frequently with the parent to discuss how things are going.
