Parent support sessions with ubuntu

What are parent sessions?

Parent sessions are designed to help parents and carers strengthen their relationship with their child. The support is offered over one initial meeting and subsequent one-to-one sessions with a therapist, either in person or online.

The sessions provide a safe, supportive space for you to reflect on what is working well, explore any difficulties you may be experiencing, and think differently about your relationship with your child.

Parent Sessions can be short-term or more in depth over a longer period of time.

They can work well on their own or alongside play therapy for your child.

Our philosophy

Rather than focusing on “fixing” behaviour, the work centres on understanding the relationship between you and your child. Together, you and the therapist will identify your aims for the sessions and explore practical, meaningful ways to create positive change.

The therapist will work with you creatively and collaboratively, offering practical, experiential guidance tailored to your family. This may include reflective exercises, discussion, and trying out new ways of responding that feel realistic and manageable for you.

The aim of these sessions is to help you feel more confident, connected, and supported as a parent, and to enable lasting, positive change in your relationship with your child.

We have therapists trained in the Nurturing Programme, Therapeutic Parenting and Parent-Child Attachment Play (PCAP). They will use a mixture of this training to tailor sessions to what you need.

Testimonials:

“Megan is welcoming, non-judgemental and made me feel at ease from the get go.

Parent Sessions have helped me reflect on my own parenting skills, and helped me remind myself that connection is key. I am a reactive person who can get overwhelmed easily, so I’m really glad I’ve worked with Megan. It’s been a great experience that has helped me think outside the box.”

Who is it for?

Parent sessions might be for you if you want to focus on improving the relationship with your child in particular.

A short amount of sessions might be for you if:

  • You’re feeling stuck or unsure about how to respond to certain behaviours

  • You want to make relational changes with your child to improve connection and communication

  • You’re noticing increasing tension, conflict, or misunderstandings at home

  • You’d like professional guidance before challenges become more complex

  • You’re open to reflecting on your parenting approach and trying new tools

You might want sessions over a longer period of time if you:

  • Are navigating more complex or ongoing challenges

  • Want consistent support as your child develops and circumstances change

  • Feel stuck in repeating patterns at home

  • Are parenting through transitions (e.g., separation, school changes, adolescence)

  • Would value a trusted professional to think alongside them over time

Where will support take place?

Ideally and whenever possible, sessions will happen in person at either our playrooms in St Anne’s House in South Bristol (BS4 4AB), or our playroom in The Stable in Weston-Super-Mare (BS23 1JY). Sessions are often richer, more creative and more fulfilling when therapist and parent can meet in one place.

However, we appreciate that this won’t be possible for everybody. If you won’t be able to make it to one of our playrooms, we can have sessions online over video call.

How long does this support last?

For as long as you want it! It might be that 3 sessions is all you need. You might like to meet with a therapist for a little longer.

We will always start with an initial meeting. This is a space for you to share what’s difficult and come up with a plan of how we’re going to move forward.

We recommend leaving 2-3 weeks between sessions. This gives you time to process and put into practice things you have discussed with your therapist.

Costs

One parent session costs £65.

If you live close to one of our playrooms in BS4 or BS23, we can offer sessions at a discounted rate of £55.
